How We Score

By Motorlark Editorial Team Updated 2 Nov 2026

Motorlark does not give products numeric scores or star ratings, and we do not run our own product tests. Each guide is a researched comparison, and this page explains how we rank the picks inside it.

The criteria we use

  • Fit for the named vehicle, engine size or tire size
  • Maker ratings such as peak amps, engine limits, pressure range and duty cycle
  • Safety features stated by the maker, such as reverse polarity protection
  • Patterns that repeat across many verified owner reviews
  • Price tier against similar products in the same guide

How the weights work

Each guide lists its own criteria and the percentage each one counts for in its "How we researched" section, because the details that matter for one buying question are not the same for another. Fit for the named buyer always counts for the most.

Price tiers

We do not print dollar prices. Amazon prices change often and we have no live price feed, so each pick shows a price tier instead: Budget, Mid-range or Premium. The tier compares the maker list price on our check date with similar products in the same category. Use the "Check current price on Amazon" link to see today's price. Price tier is a small part of the ranking, and we never pick a product because of the commission it might earn.

What the label means

A guide labelled "Researched comparison" rests on maker documents, current listings and owner-review patterns. It is not a lab test. See How We Research for the full method.
